SYNOPSIS
In his long-awaited follow-up to 1997’s Coven, filmmaker Mark Borchardt steps behind the camera again with The Dundee Project, a documentary chronicling a small town UFO festival in Wisconsin. Featuring interviews with eccentric locals, including UFO Bob, the film explores the annual ritual, which is equal parts sky watching and heavy drinking, and leaves Borchardt (who narrates the film) pondering whether any of it really happened at all.
REVIEWS
“The gap between Borchardt’s flowery narration (he calls the bar owner “the centrifugal figure of all things byzantine”) and the tottering local denizens on screen is a hoot, especially a character named UFO Bob who insists that the aliens like to come to Wisconsin to tune into Green Bay Packers games. The film was saved from being mean-spirited by Borchardt’s earnest and generous presence in front of and behind the camera.”
– The Capital Times
“Features colorful Wisconsinites telling UFO stories. Borchardt, who is also a character in the film, explains his fascination in the first-person. Throughout the film, Borchardt goes back to one character, UFO Bob, who insists he communicates with UFOs via radio waves, and that these extraterrestrials take interest in Packers games.”
– Central Time, WPR/NPR
“You can’t help but think of Werner Herzog as you hear Borchardt’s dryly-stated yet somehow poetic narrative—the voice of someone who comes to observe and to learn, yet without pretending to suspend his own sensibility and judgment.”
– Shepherd Express
“Something about the film’s mix of conspiracy theorists and dreamers feels like a perfect fit for Borchardt. There’s talk of a homemade time machine, aliens keeping track of the local football team and a nearby vortex for spaceships. Tying it all together is an outlook that Mark has managed to find poetry in – a reminder that outsiders can be found everywhere.”
– Huck Magazine
“Terrific … documents the UFO Daze gathering in Dundee, Wisconsin with appreciation, respect, and fun. Great shots of the scene mesh perfectly with great attendee interviews, making this an early Festival highlight.”
– Milwaukee Record
“Man, it is nice to have Borchardt back in action. The Coven helmer was meant to make films … Highly recommended.”
